Craniosacral Therapy

Craniosacral Therapy (CST) is a gentle, hands-on approach that works with the craniosacral system—a network involving the membranes surrounding the brain and spinal cord, as well as the cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) that nourishes and protects them. While the name comes from the cranium (head) and sacrum (tailbone), CST focuses on the entire system that connects these two points. The dura mater, the membrane encasing the brain and spinal cord, is continuous from the skull down to the tailbone. Within this system, cerebrospinal fluid is produced and reabsorbed in a rhythm independent of the heartbeat or breath. This craniosacral rhythm can be felt throughout the body and provides valuable insight into areas of restriction or imbalance.

Therapists trained in CST use their hands to evaluate the strength, quality, and symmetry of this rhythm across the body. This assessment helps them identify where tension or dysfunction may be interfering with the body's natural healing processes. Treatment may focus on physical tension, but CST also considers emotional, energetic, and even spiritual factors. Different practitioners may emphasize different aspects of CST, depending on their training or therapeutic philosophy. For instance, Upledger Craniosacral Therapy typically begins with addressing physical restrictions and balancing the membranes at the core of the system to improve central nervous system function. However, because emotional and energetic patterns are often stored in the body, CST can also help clear the lingering effects of trauma.

One reason CST is effective lies in the body’s fascial network —a continuous web of connective tissue that wraps around every muscle, bone, organ, and vessel. Fascia links the entire body, allowing a restriction in one area to affect distant structures. A therapist may notice tightness in the hips while simply holding a client’s ankles due to subtle changes in the fascia. These restrictions can impair circulation, nerve function, and organ mobility, all of which can influence the craniosacral rhythm.

During a CST session, clients remain fully clothed and lie on a comfortable treatment table. The therapist uses light touch —typically no more than the weight of a nickel— to evaluate and release tension. Techniques may involve gentle traction or subtle adjustments, especially in areas like the base of the skull where tension is common. The goal is to encourage tissues to release gradually without triggering a defensive muscular response. This light, sustained touch gives the body time to reset and adapt to healthier patterns.

CST can enhance the flow of cerebrospinal fluid and reduce membrane tension, supporting the body’s ability to heal itself. It is suitable for all ages and may relieve symptoms related to migraines, TMJ dysfunction, spinal trauma, and more. Since the craniosacral system houses the central nervous system, improvements in this area can also positively affect conditions like anxiety, asthma, and fibromyalgia. By gently supporting the physical and energetic balance of the body, Craniosacral Therapy can help foster overall wellness—physically, emotionally, and spiritually.
